Posted On: 2015-03-18
Application Deadline: 2015-04-18
Time Commitment: 1-5 hr / month

Mandate/Objectives:
The Dance Current is the print magazine published by multi-platform education and media company Dance Media Group/Groupe Danse Média. We produce print, online and live content and programming that serves to educate the dance sector and the general public, cultivating literacy and critical discourse about the art, culture and practice of dance in Canada. Our bimonthly print magazine is the keystone of our activity.

Our VISION is of a Canadian public and a broad-reaching dance sector that are: 1) critically engaged with dance art and practice as a part of the Canadian cultural experience, 2) better able to appreciate dance/movement as cultural and aesthetic expression, 3) literate in the current and historical context that shapes the field, 4) alive with robust conversation, and 4) inclusive of diverse perspectives.

Our MISSION is to be the authoritative magazine leading and developing critical discourse and engaged conversation about the art, practice and culture of dance in Canada. We do this by commissioning, curating and publishing original Canadian content by dance artists, educators, scholars, writers and photographers, as well as arts and culture journalists and writers from beyond dance. The Dance Current magazine is the only publication of its kind for dance in Canada.

Geographic Location & Community Served: Located in Toronto, the publication serves the dance community and the general public regionally, nationally and internationally. The magazine is available by subscription, single copy and back issue at various dance conferences and events. Our French summaries of core feature articles in print make our content accessible to the Canadian francophonie.

Brief History, Milestones and Recent Accomplishments: The Dance Current was founded in 1998 by Megan Andrews and incorporated in Ontario in 2002 as a not-for-profit organization under Dance Media Group. We have published consistently for over 16 years, and proudly produce six print issues annually. We are the second longest–running dance publication in Canadian history and by far the most prolific.
Begun as a local newsletter for the Toronto scene, in its second year the publication secured its first grant funding and gradually embraced the national dance landscape. In 2002, we began publishing critical reviews online; we subsequently expanded our digital content to include exclusive features, news and video and performance listings on separate platforms. We have partnered on several national conferences/symposia advancing dance discourse and literacy in Canada including multiple biannual Dance Dialogues events in partnership with the Canada Dance Festival. In 2008, we celebrated 10 years in print, with 100 issues and “over 1 million published words” about dance in Canada. In 2011, Kathleen Smith joined the organization as Editor. In 2012, the organization secured 3-year funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to invest in capacity building, including supplements to staff salaries, investment in new technology and program development, including the creation of a new website. This 3-year commitment represents a major opportunity for The Dance Current and Dance Media Group to leverage all resource investments to move the organization to stable footing as a multi-platform arts and culture publication – with our print magazine as flagship. In 2013, we launched a new website at thedancecurrent.com uniting our five formerly discrete content streams and ten-year digital archive, all served by a completely keyword tagged and searchable database. A complete searchable index of our 16 year back-issue archive will soon be available on our website.

Structure: The Dance Current / Dance Media Group is stewarded by a 6–9 person board and run by 2 full-time and 2 part-time contract staff, with 40+ freelance contributors, 6-8 volunteer interns and support from a number of industry consultants and advisors. We regularly partner with other dance-sector organizations on various initiatives. Board members meet monthly for approximately two hours from 6:30pm to 9:30pm in the Distillery district.

Key Personnel: Executive Director & Founding Editor: Megan Andrews; Editor: Kate Morris; Managing Editor: Brittany Duggan; Publisher: David Levine. Board of Directors: Chair: Amanda Hancox; Vice-Chair: Marc Richard; Secretary: Marilyn Biderman; Treasurer: Andreah Barker; Ann-Marie Williams, Megan Andrews (ex officio).
